Where has your joy gone off to, my sweet?
Even when you smile, I miss your happiness.
I long for that glow in your emerald eyes,
My caged little sparrow, now turned a crow.
I ask over and over, "What has happened?"
You click your sleak beak, and blink.
I feel my chest cave into a sigh...
My fingertips stroke your tired face,
They graze over a broken quill.
Where is your song, your peppy tweet?
Even when you speak, I feel your sadness.
I long to hear you call without cries,
My trapped little sparrow, now I know.
I ask time and time again, "Have you fallen?"
You ruffle inwardly, and your eyes sink.
I feel like a bit of me may die...
My hands cup your weak body, a safe place,
They wish to redeem your lively will.
